Prospect Heights, Heating and Air Contractors

A few miles north of downtown Chicago is Prospect Heights, Ill., one of the city’s oldest suburbs. The area retains its country feel despite its proximity to the big city, and residents appreciate its pastoral charm. Close to Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect, the area took its name from its neighbors, but it has its own character.

Prospect Heights History

Native people had formed settlements along the shores of Lake Michigan for centuries, taking advantage of abundant natural resources in the area. The first European settlements in the region were a few miles to the south in Chicago, but the low hills to the north were ideal for dairy cattle. In 1830, most of the land belonged to Hiram L. Kennicott, a wildly successful dairy farmer who sold his wares throughout the northeastern states. Although the grand mansion he built with his earnings no longer stands, his name is still attached to many streets and side roads throughout neighboring Arlington Heights and Prospect Heights.

A century later, the Kennicott family sold much of their farm to developers who realized the value of the land had skyrocketed with Chicago’s expansion. In 1935, the first houses appeared along the main street at the time, Elmhurst Road. Sales were brisk as Chicago’s upwardly mobile families looked for more land on which to build, and by 1937, the first shopping center appeared in the neighborhood. Within 20 years, the population had grown from a few dozen families to thousands of residents.

The same demand for housing that helped Prospect Heights grow also affected its neighboring communities, and pressure to annex the township as part of Arlington Heights or Mount Prospect mounted throughout the 1960s. In 1976, the town became officially incorporated rather than become a part of another suburb.

For Visitors and Residents of Prospect Heights, IL

The same open fields and green pastures that made the region ideal for the Kennicotts’ dairy farm also suit it well for parks and golf courses. One of the largest and oldest courses is the Rob Roy Golf Course, which is open to the public and hosts many local and regional tournaments throughout the year. The course is part of the River Trails Park District, a network of parks, pools and skating rinks available to residents and visitors.

For those who prefer culture and history to outdoor activities, the Mount Prospect Historical Society features home tours throughout the region, including visits to historic buildings in the Prospect Heights area. Families with younger children are close to the Kohl Children’s Museum in nearby Glenview. The interactive museum’s exhibits change regularly and teach kids about everything from how butterflies grow to how gears work. The museum is as entertaining as it is educational and helps keep Prospect Heights school ratings high.
