Maywood, Illinois was incorporated as a town on October 22, 1881. Colonel William T. Nichols, a senator and state representative from Vermont, discovered the area along with six other men in 1868. He named the town in honor of his deceased daughter, May. The original town consisted of less than two square miles of the property. The town prospered in its early years and its population doubled between 1880 and 1890.
In 1929, the 33rd Tank Company of the Illinois National Guard was organized in Maywood. When World War II got underway, 122 men from Company B left Maywood to fight on the Philippine Islands. The deployed men became part of the Bataan Death March. Unfortunately, 81 of the 122 soldiers were killed. To honor their sacrifice, Maywood holds a Bataan Day Parade every year.
