Glencoe, Heating and Air Contractors

In 1835, Anson Taylor and his family left the growing city of Chicago and built a home on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. Lumber was plentiful, and soon, more settlers began building homes in the area. First known as Taylorsport, the new community began to grow when rail service arrived in 1855. Walter Gurnee, president of the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad, bought a large tract of land from his father-in-law, William Coe, and he built a grandiose mansion on the grounds. Gurnee then arranged for a train station to be built across from his new home.

With easy access to transportation, many wealthy Chicago families followed Gurnee’s lead and began building homes along the North Shore. In 1869, Glencoe was incorporated as a village. Although the village has the same seal as Glencoe, Scotland, some accounts say that the area was known informally as Coe’s Glen, after William Coe. Today, Glencoe is one of the most affluent suburbs in the Chicago area.

Located in the northeastern area of Illinois, Glencoe is situated on the west shore of Lake Michigan and is roughly 24 miles north of Chicago. It is surrounded by golf courses, country clubs, and the neighboring communities of Highland Park, Northbrook, and Winnetka. Glencoe has a total area of 3.8 square miles.

According to the latest figures, Glencoe has a population of slightly under 9,000 residents. All of the adults have graduated from high school, and over 84 percent of the adults have graduated from college. Approximately 93 percent of the residents own their homes, and the average value of a home in Glencoe is about $971,000. The median income is around $119,000.

Climate and Weather

Like much of the Chicago area, Glencoe has a humid continental climate and experiences all four seasons. Summers are warm and humid, and winters are typically cold. In the summer, the average high temperature is 85 degrees, and in the winter, the average low is 17 degrees.

Local Attractions and Events

Throughout the year, Glencoe features a wide variety of fun things to do. In the summer, there are free outdoor movies on the village green, an Independence Day parade, and concerts on the beach. There is also a farmers market downtown, and in December, the village hosts a tree lighting and welcomes Santa. The Glencoe Park District maintains several parks and recreational facilities, including tennis courts and ice rinks. In July, the district also sponsors a sailing festival on Lake Michigan. Residents can also enjoy the natural beauty of the Chicago Botanical Gardens. In addition to the numerous flowers and plants, visitors will find a model train exhibit, a butterfly exhibit, and a variety of special events throughout the year.
