History of Oak Park, IL

In 1835, Joseph Kettlestrings purchased a large area of land in Northern Illinois and built a home along the stage route. When the Galena and Chicago Railroad was built, people began moving to the area, which was then known as Kettlestrings Grove. The population increased dramatically after the Chicago Fire of 1871, and the community was developed as part of Cicero Township. In 1902, Oak Park was formally incorporated as a village, and today, it is a major suburb of Chicago.

Geography

Located in Cook County, Oak Park is approximately 10 miles west of Chicago and about 12 miles south of O'Hare International Airport. The village encompasses a total area of slightly over 4 square miles. The Eisenhower Expressway cuts through the village and is the main road to Chicago. Nearby communities include Forest Park, Berwyn and Cicero.

According to the latest estimates, Oak Park has a very diverse population of arpund 52,000 residents. Over 96 percent of the residents have graduated from high school, and nearly 68 percent of the adults have graduated from college. Most of the residents own their homes, and the average value of a home in Oak Park is approximately $381,000. The median income is over $74,000.

The highest temperatures occur in July, and the average high temperature is 85 degrees. January is typically the coldest month of the year, and the average low temperature is 16 degrees. Each year, Oak Park receives about 36 inches of rain and 16 inches of snow.

Public elementary schools in the village are within the Oak Park Elementary School District. Author Ernest Hemmingway was a graduate of Oak Park and River Forest High School, which is still known for its rigorous academic curriculum. The University of Illinois at Chicago is the closest university to Oak Park.

Attractions

Ernest Hemingway's childhood home has been restored and is now open to the public. Visitors can also visit the nearby Hemingway Museum and learn more about the famous author. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright began his illustrious career in Oak Park, and the village contains the largest number of Wright-designed buildings in the world. Visitors can tour Wright's former home and many of the buildings he designed. The village also hosts special events at Halloween, Independence Day and Christmas.
