Oak Lawn is located in Cook County and was originally called Black Oaks Grove. Its growth was spurred by migrants from south Chicago after World War II and presently has approximately 57,000 residents. Farmer John Simpson was the first settler who purchased a large land parcel to develop his farm in 1858. Growth continued through 1879 when the Simpson brothers signed an agreement with Colonel Plumb to establish a railroad through Black Oaks Grove. The village incorporated in 1909, and a police and fire station were constructed. By the 1930s, the village had more than 2,000 people. Like many other towns, the village’s growth was hampered by the Great Depression. The 1960s marked a period of rapid growth for Oak Lawn, and it quickly became a middle-class suburban village. Today, Oak Lawn is a thriving and mature village with a strong economic base, and Christ Hospital is the area’s largest employer.
