Northbrook is a scenic suburb of Chicago and located in Cook County. Its earliest settlers were the Potawatomi tribe. In the early 1800s, Joel Sterling Sherman purchased 159 acres in today’s Northbrook Central Business District. Originally, the town was named Shermerville and was mostly a farming town with brick yards. The name was changed to Northbrook in 1923, and was then comprised of approximately 500 residents. The city didn’t grow until after World World II when many servicemen moved into the area creating the development of subdivisions. By 1970, the population had increased to almost 26,000. Currently, there are approximately 35,000 residents.
