After the conclusion of the Blackhawk War, settlers began arriving in the northern part of Illinois. Gradually, a small town grew along the Fox River and was named after Major William McHenry, who had fought in the area during the Blackhawk War and who had also served in the War of 1812. In 1836, McHenry County was formed from part of Cook County, and the town of McHenry was the county seat until 1844. When rail service arrived in 1854, McHenry's population grew, and it was incorporated in 1872. McHenry soon became a favorite vacation spot for many Chicago families, and after World War II, the population more than tripled.
Located in the northernmost part of Illinois, McHenry is only about 5 miles from the Wisconsin border and approximately 50 miles northwest of Chicago. It has a total area of almost 15 square miles. Situated along the Fox River, the town is surrounded by lakes, bogs and glacial moraines. The town's center is located at the intersection of Interstate 120 and Interstate 31.

Nearly 90 percent of the residents have graduated from high school and almost 25 percent of the adults have graduated college.
