Though the village of Grayslake wasn't officially established until 1895, the area was settled by pioneers in the 1830s and named after William Gray, a prominent local resident. Grayslake's population grew throughout the 1800s as numerous farmers settled down and the Wisconsin Central Railroad arrived.
