Glencoe, Heating and Air Contractors

History

In 1835, Anson Taylor and his family left the growing city of Chicago and built a home on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. Lumber was plentiful, and soon, more settlers began building homes in the area. First known as Taylorsport, the new community began to grow when rail service arrived in 1855. Walter Gurnee, president of the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad, bought a large tract of land from his father-in-law, William Coe, and he built a grandiose mansion on the grounds. Gurnee then arranged for a train station to be built across from his new home.

With easy access to transportation, many wealthy Chicago families followed Gurnee's lead and began building homes along the North Shore. In 1869, Glencoe was incorporated as a village. Although the village has the same seal as Glencoe, Scotland, some accounts say that the area was known informally as Coe's Glen, after William Coe. Today, Glencoe is one of the most affluent suburbs in the Chicago area.
