In 1832, Pierce Downer left his home in New York and set up camp in an old oak grove west of Chicago. Impressed with the fertile land, Downer claimed 160 acres for himself and started a dairy farm. As more settlers arrived, a small village began to grow. During the Civil War, the community sent the first group of volunteers from DuPage County to fight for the Union. In addition, some homes in the area were part of the Underground Railroad. In 1864, rail service came to the village, and the continued growth led to some larger lots being subdivided into smaller housing units.
Downers Grove was incorporated in 1873, and the population soon included new arrivals from Europe and other parts of the country. In 1928, the new Tivoli Theater became the second movie theater in the country to be built especially for showing motion pictures with sound. Following World War II, the construction of expressways fostered additional growth by allowing easier travel between Downers Grove and the surrounding areas. In 1946, Argonne National Laboratory was established on the outskirts of town and was the first research and engineering laboratory in the United States.
