In the early 1830s, the Treaty of Chicago paved the way for settlement of the vast prairies in Northern Illinois. The first settlers were primarily from New England, but eventually the area became home to a number of German immigrants. The increase in population led the Illinois and Wisconsin Land Company to begin developing the land in preparation for a new railroad and train station. Because rail ties were needed, the company built a lumber mill along the Des Plaines River, and a town soon developed near the mill. Socrates Rand, one of the early settlers, eventually converted the mill into a grist mill, and the town was initially named after him. After the Chicago and North Western Railroad named the new train station Des Plaines, the town took the same name, and Des Plaines was incorporated in 1869.
Located in the northwestern area of Illinois, Des Plaines has a total area of slightly over 14 square miles. Considered a suburb of Chicago, Des Plaines is only about six miles away from O'Hare International Airport. The Des Plaines River flows through the town's center, and the town's major roads include the Tri-State TollWay and the Northwest Tollway.

Over 87 percent of the residents have graduated from high school, and approximately 30 percent of the adults have graduated from college. In addition, about 3,000 veterans reside in Des Plaines.
