Crown Point, Heating and Air Contractors

History

Although the area had been a fertile hunting ground for various Native American tribes for hundreds of years, Crown Point wasn't heavily settled until the middle of the 19th century. Drawn by the fertile, nearly treeless prairie that covered the area, farmers from places like New York and Pennsylvania quickly turned the town into an agricultural hub. Crown Point's reliance on agriculture made it a populist bastion, and prominent political figures like William Jennings Bryan put it on the map with frequent campaign stops. In the 1930s, famed gangster John Dillinger escaped from prison in Crown Point before embarking on his final crime spree. These days, Crown Point is considerably quieter. In fact, it's now an affluent Chicago suburb.

Geography

Crown Point is located in the northwestern corner of Indiana. It's one of the largest municipalities in Lake County and currently serves as the heavily industrialized political subdivision's seat. The center of the city is about 30 miles from Chicago's Loop district and just a few miles from the Illinois border. It's around 15 miles to the south of Lake Michigan as well. Since Crown Point has a large, irregularly shaped land area, much of the land within the municipality's borders remains undeveloped. The more densely populated western and northern sections are covered with suburban-style residential and commercial developments.

Population and Demographics

Crown Point's population is approaching 30,000. After remaining more or less steady for much of the late 20th century, the city's headcount took off during the economic boom times of the 1990s and early 2000s. Driven by a strong local economy and affordable real estate, many transplants came to Crown Point from Chicago and its inner suburbs. Although migration slowed somewhat during the recession of the late 2000s, Crown Point's population is increasingly affluent. Its strong schools and social institutions are important selling points for the region's families.

Things to Do in Crown Point, Indiana

The Crown Point area boasts several world-class golf courses, including the Youche Country Club and the South Shore Country Club in nearby Cedar Lake. It's also the site of the massive Lake County Fair at the centrally located Lake County Fairgrounds. This annual celebration is Indiana's second-largest fair of any kind. Meanwhile, foodies can check out the Taste of Crown Point near the center of town. The summertime event attracts farmers, craftsmen and ethnic food vendors from across the Chicagoland area. For outdoorsy folks, Deep River County Park contains several excellent fishing holes.

Climate and Weather

Crown Point has a humid continental climate that's noted for changeable weather patterns and moderate amounts of precipitation. During the winter, nearby Lake Michigan produces lake effect snow squalls that can temporarily snarl traffic and cause power outages in the region. When the flakes aren't flying, Crown Point's winter days tend to be cold but sunny. The transitional seasons bring abundant precipitation and plenty of wind. In the summer, hot and often humid conditions can beset the region. Fortunately, these conditions are usually self-limiting: Warm, moist conditions often generate strong thunderstorms that provide welcome relief.
