After the conclusion of the Black Hawk War, settlers began migrating to Northern Illinois from New England and began establishing homes along the Fox River in 1834. The area's abundance of fertile soil made it ideal for farming, and as the new farming community grew, residents began calling it Barrington Center. The first schoolhouse, Northway School, was built in the early 1840s and also served as a house of worship. In 1854, rail service arrived, and plans were made to develop the area around the new Barrington Station. The village applied for incorporation in 1863, but the plans were delayed due to the Civil War. Eventually, the Village of Barrington was chartered in 1865.
The population of Barrington expanded as more people chose to leave Chicago and move to a more rural setting. In the 1920s, several prominent business leaders established large estates on the outskirts of Barrington, and the village soon became favored by wealthy families from Chicago. The estates surrounding Barrington helped protect it from the effects of urban sprawl, and today, it remains a highly desirable place to live.
Located in the northeastern portion of Illinois, Barrington is just 40 miles northwest of Chicago and has a total area of slightly under 5 square miles. The village comprises a mixture of homes, businesses, parks, wetlands and forest preserves.
According to recent estimates, Barrington has a population of slightly over 10,000 residents. The vast majority of the residents own their homes, and the median price of a home in Barrington is $474,000. Approximately 97 percent of the adults have graduated from high school, and over 63 percent of the adults have graduated from college. The median income in the village is approximately $101,000.
