When temperatures soar in Northwest Indiana, you want a comfortable place to escape the heat. Your home serves that purpose well if you've installed an air conditioner, but how do you decide on the perfect air temperature? Follow these three steps to make your home as comfortable as possible.
Increase the Temperature Slowly
Relative temperature fluctuations can make a home seem hotter than it really is. On the first warm day, don't automatically increase your thermostat settings to 80 degrees. Instead, gradually increase the temperature so your body can adjust. Every week or so, increase the thermostat setting by one degree. If you find you're too hot, decrease the temperature by one degree until you find the most comfortable setting.
Turn On Fans
Ceiling fans can make a big difference in how a room feels. Maybe you watch television for an hour every evening or read in bed before going to sleep. Turn on the fan and increase the thermostat setting if you feel chilly. Finding the best air temperature for different situations gives you more control over your thermostat and your comfort level. For example, you might set the temperature at 78 degrees for most of the day, then increase it to 80 degrees when you're sitting in a room with a fan.
Lower the Humidity
You'll feel more comfortable in your home if you maintain dry air. Air conditioners remove some of the moisture from the air, but you might need a dehumidifier. Ideally, you should keep humidity at 60 percent indoors. When taking a shower or bath, use an extractor fan or dehumidifier to prevent moisture from accumulating in the air.
