Subscribe to our RSS Feed Wondering if It’s Time for Furnace Replacement? Telltale Signs to Look For

Wednesday, January 08, 2014

You know there are obvious signs of furnace replacement, like bumping, clanking, smoke and sparks, but what are some of the more subtle signs of furnace replacement? Here are some thing to look at when determining whether it's time to replace your furnace:

  • Increased fuel usage - We're not talking about a small amount during a hard winter or the increases in the cost per unit of energy, but rather the point when your furnace starts using significantly more fuel than in the past.
  • Repair bills going up markedly - Furnaces usually have the most breakdowns during the last two years prior to replacement.
  • Furnace age - Furnaces typically are expected to last 16 to 20 years and should be replaced as a planned home repair rather than during an emergency when you can't get exactly what you want. Newer furnaces are also more energy efficient and will help pay for themselves more quickly than older systems did. If it has a pilot light, there's a good chance the furnace is over 25 years old.
  • Uneven heating - Are you starting to have problems with some rooms being too hot and others too cold? Uneven heat distribution is one of the telltale signs of furnace replacement.
  • Something not looking right - Whether it's a yellow flame, has sooty streaks, excess moisture on windows, lack of a draft in the chimney or excessive rusting of furnace exhaust pipes, these indicators can lead to carbon monoxide buildup, which can be a dangerous situation for your family.
  • Strange noises - If your furnace has been making significant noises, including banging, rattling, squealing and popping sounds, it may be on the way out. Blowing cold air or excessive blower run time is another symptom that falls into the same system.
  • Air too dry or stale - Aging furnaces don't do as good a job at filtering allergens out or circulating the air as well as it should.

If you're having any of these problems, it's time to shop for a new furnace. Comfort24-7 has an extensive listing of experienced contractors in the greater Chicago area to help make your home comfortable once again. Contact us today!
