Your duct system could make an ideal place for rodents to call home and can also act as a major thoroughfare. They provide a consistent, temperature-controlled habitat and are predator-free. However, in addition to littering your ducts and compromising indoor air quality, rodents in the HVAC system cause air flow obstructions that contribute to energy waste, higher utility bills and excessive wear and tear on your HVAC equipment.

Here are steps you can take if you suspect there are rodents in the HVAC system of your Chicago home.

  1. Turn the system off. Switch your heating and cooling system off and allow the heating grates to cool.
  2. Remove grates. Remove all of the grates covering your heating vents.
  3. Place loaded traps. Mice have a very keen sense of smell so a small dab of cheese, peanut butter, meat or chocolate will suffice. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for loading and setting the traps. Then place once trap per duct location. The trap should be placed with the loaded bait toward the interior wall of the duct, forming a T.
  4. Turn system back on. Once the traps have all been placed, return the grates and switch your system back on.
  5. Check the traps. Each morning, use a flashlight to peer into the grates and check for a trapped mouse. Wear rubber gloves to dispose of the mouse. Put it in a sealed bag and throw it away. Reset the trap. Continue this process until you're no longer catching mice.
  6. Seal gaps. Now it's time to inspect your home carefully and seal any gaps where mice are gaining entry. Inspect all vents in your roof and on the walls. Block any noticeable gaps with a fine wire mesh. Seal any gaps around roof rafters, pipes, vents, door and window frames.
  7. Address duct issues. Contact an HVAC contractor and schedule a duct cleaning to remove pet waste and debris. Then your ducts can be repaired and sealed as needed.
